I have never aspired to write poetry.
Yet I believe each person has an instinctive poetic impulse. And, whether nurtured or spontaneous, it can be released to express a meaningful insight into life and our experience of living. If we catch it at that moment, we might even be able to write it down.
The incident of I met a man today occurred in 2013 at Paradise Bakery in Mesa, Arizona. Later that day, it seemed natural to sit down and say what was going on inside of me.
I met a man today
I met a man today
He offered to take our picture
so we could send she and I to friends and family
With smiling parkas standing beside the palm tree
in the shadows, he was not happy
So we moved more into the sun
His joy surprised me
They will like this one, he said
We shared a few moments
He seemed in no hurry
Why are you here Where are you from
I wanted but could not get away
His smile, tilt of head, coming from elsewhere
Enjoy your stay
It is a beautiful place
His hand went to his side
I donated a kidney to my wife last year
She died four days later
